Well, it only took me 9 months to get back to the aerospace industry from being laid off. I even get to do a similar job, sadly without the same amount of flight test work and more of the desk work. I guess that is ok though, I will just have to work on my private pilots license!
In the 9 months since I was laid off, I didn’t sit on my bum and collect unemployment checks, I did engineering work for bridges, boardwalks, pergolas and a number of other projects; I set up operated and did trouble shooting on machinery to create new processes and refine others; I moved snow; I was an IT professional doing computer and printer repair and installation as well as general tech support; and I did a variety of other tasks as well. I think I stayed busy!
Being laid off sure put some stresses on my life and my marriage. I worked in Minnesota for 9 moths while my wife (of just over a year when i was first laid off) stayed in KS to watch over the house and work at her job. Needless to say, I did a lot of driving to see her, every other weekend I spent 16 hrs (1000+ miles) driving so I could spend a few days with her. It hasn’t been the best experience of my life, that much I can say. Surprisingly, we are both probably better off because of it. We don’t take our time together for granted, we try to enjoy each other and do more fun things together when we can.
Needless to say, I will be happy to get back to something more normal, I am ready to get back to seeing my wife every day!
