Laid off

7 06 2009

Well it finally happened, the waiting is over.  I have been laid off.  Thanks to the WARN act, I get paid for the next 60 days!  Also, thanks to Cessna for providing a severance package.

I am really more disappointed that I am loosing a fun job and that I have to give up some good co-workers that have become good friends.  Other than that, I don’t really care a whole lot.  I guess I will miss the paychecks but I have other options for earn a living (no, not selling drugs or other illeagal things).

The thing that I have learned from this is that even though there may not be engineering jobs out there, there are jobs so no matter what, I will make money to pay the bills.  That is priority number one, pay the bills and provide for my family.  It doesn’t matter what type of job it is as long as it satisfies that nessecity.  I think that is one thing that a lot of people forget, NOONE is to good to work a low paying job it they need the money.

I guess we will see where this rollercoaster takes me.

That’s very unfortunate. I think it’s amazing that you made it through 4 rounds of layoffs considering how relatively new you were. Usually they cut the beginners first. It sounds like your knowledge of technology might have given you the edge over some others.

I’m lucky in that I work for a small company and although we did have layoffs a couple months ago, no one in IT was laid off because they took the approach that they were going to need us to improve things so that they could account for the shortage of work in other areas.

The waiting through all those layoffs must have been killer. I was never really worried but then when it came down to the week that we did it you start to second guess how well you do things.

Best of luck to you and hope that you find another job that you are just as happy with.

Yeah, I am happy that I made it past 4 rounds. I think I did fairly well for myself! I just wish I could have made it longer. in a way I might be better off though, they are going to furlough the whole company for 4 weeks starting my last day. Then there will be another layoff some time after that so really, I am glad that I don’t have to sit through the furlough just to get laid off after that.
I am probably going to work for BT for a while, we will see how everything works out. Hopefully the economy turns around quickly so I can get my job at Cessna back but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be to good for a few years…

So you’re moving back to Worthington? What’s furlough?

To answer your Furlough question. It’s essentially a short term layoff where you still have a job to come back to. A.K.A a company wide shut down for a few weeks.
